They say football is a funny old game...The Kestrels record only 2 victories all season, yet back to back success means they top the mini division 8 cup group and progress to the semi-finals.
The coach warned of complacency after an impressive victory last time out, yet Kestrels failed to listen, and some superb fast attacking wing play soon found the visitors 3-0 after just 10 minutes which brought about a tactical change with Cowan forced off with a hip injury. Most teams would now crumble, but their self-belief is incredible. Prescod was unlucky not to take advantage of a lovely through ball by Bootheway, then Bell saw his effort well saved on the line, but eventually the pressure soon told as they pulled a goal back just before half-time.
Trailing 3-1 with nothing to lose, they grabbed another goal following a long-throw from Plant. Kainth won the ball back on the half-way line and our left winger smartly tucked home the rebound to level matters. Mountsorrel then scored a great counter attack goal but within seconds after the re-start, Masters volleyed home his second of the match from the edge of the box. Soon after Chamberlain fired low into the corner to put the Kestrels ahead for the first time in the match. Goals kept coming when Hirst calmly slotted home his second to make the score resemble a tennis score of 6-4. After an impressive game at the back, Gamble then left for a well-deserved rest, before Willcocks escaped punishment for a mistimed tackle when Mountsorrel were clean through on goal. The visitors scored late on to make for a nervy last couple of minutes, but Kestrels held firm to the delight of the 25 spectators who'd witnessed an absolute classic.
